About Beclate® Inhaler

Rating of sales:

Beclate® Inhaler is a synthetic glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory action within the respiratory tract. The inhaler is manufactured by Cipla. It works by blocking the inflammatory process, that causes swelling in the airways of the lungs and reduces such symptoms of asthma like wheezing, cough, tightness in the chest and shortness of breath. Beclate® Inhaler solely targets the inflammation causing factors, inhibits them and does not allow to accumulate and cause asthmatic conditions. Beclate® Inhaler contains the active ingredient Beclomethasone, a corticosteroid, used to prevent the symptoms of mild, moderate or severe asthma. Beclomethasone is used in patients with persistent asthma, preventing its exacerbations and symptoms, caused by swollen and inflamed airways. The inhaler is to be used through the oral inhalation only. It contains pressurized medicine that is delivered in a metered dose with every puff. The medication should only be used for a long-term management, but not when an asthma attack happens. For this purpose, patients will need a fast- and short-acting inhaled bronchodilator to relieve the symptoms of an acute attack.

Beclate® Inhaler is indicated for the treatment of bronchospasm in the following groups of patients with asthma:

- Asthmatic patients poorly controlled with bronchodilators. In these patients, Beclate® Inhaler may facilitate the control of asthma and may reduce the need for bronchodilators.

- Patients who are inadequately controlled by sodium cromoglycate in addition to bronchodilators.

- Patients with severe asthma who are dependent on systemic corticosteroids, or adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) or its synthetic equivalent, or for patients who have received intermittent courses of steroids.

- Managing asthma in children due to the effective control without the retardation of growth, commonly associated with systemic administration of steroids.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Beclomethasone is a topical glucocorticosteroid and anti-inflammatory medicine that acts directly on the walls of the small air passages by preventing the production of inflammatory agents in the lungs, thus easing such asthma symptoms as wheezing, cough, tightness of the chest and shortness of breath. Beclomethasone enhances 2-adrenergic receptor activation in the human lung promoting the smooth muscle relaxation and the inhibition of asthma mediator release from some, but not all, inflammatory cells. Beclomethasone, unlike systemic corticosteroids, has a topical effect on the lungs and is absorbed into the body in small amounts, therefore not causing serious side effects which may occur when taken in forms other than the oral inhalation.

The dosage of Beclate® Inhaler depends on the severity of asthma and should be prescribed by a doctor for each individually. To be effective, the medication should be used on a regular basis, even when the patient shows no asthma symptoms.

The recommended dosage for the asthma therapy:

- Mild asthma: 100 - 200 mcg a day in two divided doses.

- Moderate asthma: 200 - 400 mcg a day in two divided doses.

- Severe asthma: 400 - 800 mcg a day in two divided doses.

- Maximum dose: 800 mcg a day.

The improvement may be felt within 24 hours after the medicine has been inhaled, however, the overall result is seen in 1 to 4 weeks after the regular administration. Asthmatic patients should be under a constant supervision of a doctor and take regular tests on their asthma condition.

How to use your inhaler correctly:

1. Remove the mouthpiece cover, and check the mouthpiece thoroughly to see that it is clean. Shake the inhaler vigorously.

2. Hold the inhaler between index finger and thumb. Breathe out gently through your mouth and immediately place the mouthpiece in your mouth between your teeth (do not bite it).

3. Grip the mouthpiece firmly with your lips. Tilt your head slightly backward. Start breathing in slowly through your mouth. At the same time press the canister as shown, to release one dose while continuing to breathe in steadily and deeply.

4. Remove the inhaler from your mouth. Hold your breath for at least 10 seconds, or as long as is comfortable. Breathe out slowly.

5. If another dose is required, wait for at least one minute and repeat steps 1 to 4. After use, replace the mouthpiece cover.

Clean your inhaler at least once a week, following the instruction:

1. Carefully pull the metal canister out of the adaptor of the inhaler. Remove the mouthpiece cover.

2. Rinse the adaptor and the mouthpiece cover in warm water but do not put the metal canister into the water.

3. Leave to dry in a warm place. Avoid excessive heat.

4. Replace the canister and the mouthpiece cover correctly.

Q: What is Beclate® Inhaler used for?

A: Beclate® Inhaler is known as a 'preventer' asthma medication and is used regularly as part of a long-term asthma management plan, which may also include a ‘reliever’ or ‘rescue’ medication, for use when needed. It blocks the inflammatory process, which causes swelling in the airways of the lungs, and reduces symptoms of asthma, including wheezing, cough tightness in the chest and shortness of breath.

Q: How much to take?

A: The correct dose to be taken always depends on the prescription of your doctor. This prescription always depends upon the severity and demand of the disease condition. Hence it is necessary to follow doctor’s instructions. The dose can vary widely and is required to be taken on a regular basis.

Q: Is Beclate® Inhaler safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

A: The Inhaler is not recommended to use if pregnant or breastfeeding unless clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking this medication.
