About Montair®

Rating of sales:

Montair® tablets are manufactured by Cipla. The active pharmaceutical ingredient present in the medication is Montelukast, that is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) used for the maintenance and treatment of asthma, prevention of the narrowing of airways triggered by exercise, and relief of allergic rhinitis symptoms. It acts by blocking naturally occurring chemicals in the lungs, called leukotrienes, which cause narrowing of the airways and inflammation in the lungs, leading to symptoms like coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Montair® tablets should not be used to treat an acute attack of asthma. If an acute attack occurs, a fast-acting (‘rescue’) medicine is required.

- maintenance treatment of asthma;

- prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB);

- seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Montelukast, a selective and orally active (leukotriene receptor antagonist, which means that it binds to specific receptors on the cells of the airways and also cells in the airways that are involved in the inflammatory process (like macrophages), and inhibits the action of leukotrienes on these cells. In asthma, leukotriene-mediated effects cause bronchoconstriction (narrowing of the airways), inflammation, swelling and mucous secretion. In allergic rhinitis, leukotrienes are released in the nasal passages after exposure to an allergen like pollen or house dust mites and cause irritation and inflammation. By binding to the receptors of leukotrienes substance Montelukast tablets cause bronchodilation within 2 hours of oral administration. The medicine acts by blocking leukotrienes’ inflammatory action and reduces asthma symptoms including coughing, wheezing and chest tightness and symptoms of allergic rhinitis like nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing.
