Tiova® Inhaler is manufactured by Cipla and is used regularly as a maintenance therapy to prevent bronchospasm and breathing difficulties in those suffering from COPD, bronchitis, emphysema, and other related conditions. The medication contains the active ingredient Tiotropium in aerosol form, that when inhaled, acts directly in the airways by relieving symptoms caused by bronchospasm, such as shortness of breath, chronic cough with sputum production, chest tightness, and wheezing. Tiotropium is a bronchodilator belonging to the group of long-acting anticholinergics. It has an anticholinergic effect and it antagonizes the action of acetylcholine which causes spasm of the airways by interacting with the muscarinic receptors on the wall. Tiotropium relaxes the smooth muscles of the bronchial wall from its antimuscarinic action, which stops the airways from narrowing and allows them to open up. Tiova® Inhaler is a long-term treatment and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma attacks.

- chronic bronchitis;

- emphysema.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Tiova® Inhaler contains the bronchodilator Tiotropium, which is a long-acting anticholinergic that acts on specific muscarinic receptors in the bronchioles of the lung to inhibit the interaction of acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger of the nervous system) with muscarinic receptors, preventing spasm of the airway wall caused by acetylcholine. Blocking the action of acetylcholine in the airways, causes the smooth muscle in the airway walls to relax and allows the airways to dilate (widen) which increases airflow into the lungs and relieves bronchospasm (narrowing of the airways).

Tiova® Inhaler is for the oral inhalation only. Patients who have difficulties with synchronizing aerosol actuator and inspiration of breath can use Levolin® Inhaler with the help of Cipla Zerostat VT/Zerostat Spacer device.

The recommended dosage for adults and children over 12 years of age: 2 puffs once daily.

Do not take more than two inhalations every 24 hours.

How to use Tiova® Inhaler:

1. Remove the mouthpiece cover and shake the inhaler.

2. Breathe out as far as is comfortable.

3. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth.

4. Press down on the top of the inhaler to release a dose of Tiotropium while still breathing in through your mouth.

5. Hold your breath for a few seconds, then breathe normally.

6. Replace the mouthpiece cover.

How to use your inhaler with a ‘spacer’ device:

1. Hold the inhaler upright, place your thumb on the bottom of the inhaler and your first finger on the top. Then shake the inhaler several times up and down.

2. Insert the mouthpiece of the inhaler into the spacer.

3. Put the spacer mouthpiece in a mouth and hold it firmly between your lips (do not bite it).

4. Press down once on the aerosol canister with the first finger. This releases one puff into the spacer.

5. Take a few deep and slow breaths to inhale the medicine.

6. Take the spacer out of your mouth.

7. Hold your breath as you count to 10 if you can.

8. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water or clean your teeth.

Q: What is Tiova® Inhaler used for?

A: The preparation is used to prevent bronchospasm associated with reversible COPD, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. It works in the lungs by blocking the muscarinic receptors in the airways, which stops the airways from narrowing, and allows them to open up. This can make it easier for patients with lung disease to breathe.

Q: Is it safe to use Tiova® Inhaler during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

A: Tiova® Inhaler should be administered during pregnancy or while breastfeeding only if the potential benefits justify the potential risk to the baby. Please follow your doctor’s advice regarding its use.

Q: Can this medicine be given to children?

A: Tiova® Inhaler is approved for use in the maintenance treatment of bronchospasm associated with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. This disease does not normally occur in children, therefore the safety and effectiveness of Tiotropium in children have not been established. Do not give the medication to children under 12 years of age without consulting your doctor.
